9 Things to Consider When Choosing Live Music for Your Wedding (plus a bonus wedding song checklist!)

Planning your dream wedding involves countless decisions, and one of the most crucial factors in creating the perfect vibe is choosing the right live music. From the romantic melodies during the ceremony to the energetic tunes for the reception, every song played sets the tone for your special day. To help you navigate this essential aspect, here are nine things to consider when selecting the live music for your wedding:

  • Reflect Your Style : The music you choose should reflect your individual style as a couple. Whether you prefer classic wedding songs, modern hits, or a unique genre that speaks to your personalities, ensure the music resonates with both of you.

  • Consider the Venue : The venue plays a significant role in determining the type of music that will suit the setting. An elegant ballroom may call for a string quartet or a solo pianist, while an outdoor garden wedding could be enhanced with acoustic guitar or a live band.

  • Understand the Flow : Think about the flow of your wedding day and how different musical styles can complement each moment. Soft melodies during the ceremony, upbeat tunes for the reception, and a memorable song for your first dance – each segment requires a suitable soundtrack. Don't be afraid to let your hair down and let things get fun and lively during your drinks reception or wedding breakfast. Likewise, feel free to have a moment to breath during your evening party e.g. consider asking your band for a slow dance section.

  • Interact with the Musicians : If possible, interact with the musicians before hiring them. This personal connection can help you gauge their professionalism, style, and ability to set the desired mood for your wedding day.

  • Budget Considerations : Live music is a significant investment in your wedding, so establish a budget early on. Research different options, from solo performers to full bands, to find a balance between quality and cost that fits within your overall wedding budget.

  • Song Requests and Personalisation : Many live musicians are open to song requests, allowing you to personalise your wedding playlist with meaningful tracks. Consider including your favourite songs or ones that hold sentimental value to make the music even more special. Don't be afraid to think outside the box! Why not give a modern song a retro twist? Or vice versa!

  • Check Reviews and Recommendations : Before finalising your choice, read reviews or seek recommendations from other couples who have hired the same musicians. Feedback from previous clients can give you valuable insights into the quality of their performance and professionalism.

  • Experience and Expertise : Opt for experienced musicians who have expertise in performing at weddings. Their familiarity with the flow of events, timing, and ability to adapt to last-minute changes can make a significant difference in ensuring a seamless musical experience.

  • Contract and Logistics : Once you've selected your live music, ensure you have a clear contract outlining the terms, logistics, and any special requests. Confirm details such as setup time, venue location, performance duration, and equipment requirements to avoid any last-minute surprises. If your wedding venue requires specific documentation such as PLI (Public Liability Insurance) or PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) certificates then check that your musicians are able to provide this.

By considering these nine key factors when choosing the live music for your wedding, you can create a magical atmosphere that enhances every moment of your special day. From the heartfelt melodies during the ceremony to the celebratory tunes at the reception, the right music will truly make your wedding unforgettable.

BONUS WEDDING MUSIC CHECKLIST

Here is a useful checklist for compiling your essential wedding songs!

  • Pre-ceremony (whilst guests are being seated) Recommended = Relaxing, calming, gentle music, performed live or played over a speaker

  • Bridal party entrance (for same-sex couples, don't forget to tell your musicians whether you are both walking down the aisle and whether you will have different entrance songs) Recommended = Romantic, uplifting, awe-inspiring song

  • Signing the register Recommended = Light-hearted, toned down versions of your favourite songs

  • Ceremony exit song (your first moment as a married couple) Recommended = Uplifting and joyous sing-along

  • Drinks reception requests Recommended = Request songs that will appeal to all ages (a lot of older guests often tell us they enjoy this bit of the day more than the evening party!)

  • Wedding breakfast entrance Recommended = Choose a song with a big celebratory chorus

  • First dance Recommended = A song that means a lot to both of you, or... something whacky and fun! Honestly, anything goes for this one. Don't over-analyse lyrics either. Just go for a song that you can imagine sharing in this moment. If you love a song about pink elephants exploring Mars then go for it! And don't forget to let the musicians know at what point you would like everybody to come up and join you!

  • Second song Recommended = After your euphoric first dance, choose a second song that will keep everyone right where they are. This is an excellent opportunity for your photographer, videographer and content creator to get some super duper footage of everyone having the best time!

  • End of the night song Recommended = Go out on a high! Choose a BIG song that everyone will know. Here are some tried and tested guaranteed maximum fun end-of-the-night song choices: "Proud Mary", "Don't Look Back in Anger", "Mr Brightside", "All Night Long" Or, go out with a smooch! Nothing wrong with ending the night with a romantic slow-dance: "Let's Get It On", "Let's Stay Together", "Thinking Out Loud"

There are loads of other points in your wedding you can request songs for as well, but make sure you've got these main ones covered. Why not arrange a chat with your musicians before the day to find out what else they can offer you? Perhaps you're going up in a hot air balloon and want to take an acoustic guitarist up with you? Or maybe there's a special song you would like included for a particular guest? The sky is the limit.
